Newly appointed Spanish governor Don Pedro de Peralta chose this place as the provincial capital in 1609-10 but its full name was La Villa REal de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis (Royal City of the Holy Faith of St Francis of Assisi)! It is the oldest continuous seat of governement in the U.S.

The Mission of San Miguel was also established in 1610 as local headquarters for Catholic church.
