The memorial at Omaha Beach.
I was surprised by the relatively gentle slope of the land behind the beach. I can't see that ladders or ropes would have been required here. It was even flatter to the east where the British and Canadians landed. If you saw Saving Private Ryan, that was set on Utah Beach which is the next beach to the west and the ground behind the beach is apparently much steeper. Of course, the slope would not have been much of a concern were it not for the machine guns, mines and barbed wire.
